Mai ShuiTMDesign

Mai ShuiTM Design is the blending of the visual beauty of Western design with the ancient Eastern wisdom of smoothly and freely flowing energy, Fung Shui

Fung Shui is the Chinese system of reading energy which was evident as early as 2200 BCE. It originates from Taoism, which reveals the balance of all life. Originally focused on the most advantageous placement of structures on and within the land, it has evolved into a broader perspective of how you place yourself and arrange your space and the objects within this space to achieve the optimal energy Life Force/Chi/Ki flow.

Mai ShuiTM is the integration of this oriental knowledge of energy flows with the beauty created by Western design principles. In Mai ShuiTM these principles and elements of Western design--line, space, shape, form, texture, light, color, balance and rhythm--are utilized to create uplifting living and working spaces. Simultaneously, the principles of Fung Shui are applied, insuring a richly moving current of Chi energy throughout the entire area of home or office. Ultimately the completed environment is designed to trigger the emotional responses desired by the client, such as tranquility of sanctuary, joyfulness, upbeat feelings, fun, playfulness, warmth, richness, creativity, energy, and sensual delight, thus enriching the their well being.

Mai ShuiTMSeminars and Workshops
Jahnay Pickett, founder of the Mai ShuiTM system of design, gives talks and workshops throughout the country. Some of the areas discussed and examined are presented below. The guiding principle in blending and integrating Eastern and Western perspectives is what works well from both disciplines.

Review the two world perspectives as defined below. Note that although the separation of all things in the Western perspective takes us away from the security of an integrated, whole reality, it gives us the ability to recognize the unique, exquisite characteristics of each of the parts—line, space, color, texture, patterns, etc. The Eastern perspective of life as an integrated whole allows us to bring the parts back together, recognizing and reassembling their specialness and beauty.

Western Perspective of the World
 ~An externally based, material reality
~Mechanical material world created by an external power which
resides outside of the objects it creates, including humans
~Life is divided and subdivided; all things are separate
 ~Things happen to “us”
~Mostly see things as 2- or 3-dimensional, i.e., dualistic view, right
or wrong, flat surface drawings/paintings and sculpture vs. matrices

Eastern Perspective of the World
~An internal reality based on Energy flows
~The material world and each thing in it is the manifestation of Tao,
mutually arising from It like bubbles from within an ocean
~All life is equal and interconnected
~Chi is the name given to this flowing energy of the Tao/Life Force
 ~“Sees” things as 3-, 4-, or 5th-dimensional, i.e., as sculptural, with
    unseen movement going on within

Workshops consist of the study of western design principles, Feng Shui principles, and the actual hands-on design of a space. Workshops range in length from ½ day to 2 full days. To inquire further regarding a lecture or workshop in your area, please contact us at designingdevas@comcast.net

Jahnay’s statement: "I realize that in putting this integrated system on paper that I have had to generalize in many areas. For those of you who have dedicated your lives to the exactness of the Feng Shui science, I apologize, and thank you for your contribution to this and our lives.”
